Welcome to Ōrākei School Montessori – https://twitter.com/OSNZ_Montessori
Ōrākei School Montessori is a learning environment that is full of opportunities to inspire your child’s imagination. The carefully prepared and designed classroom offers a wealth of possibilities for your child to explore, discover and learn. The children are taught the wonders of the world, while being immersed in a curriculum that is broad and rich in content. The Montessori philosophy is grounded in science and every learning opportunity is meaningful, holds a sense of purpose and nurtures an ideal of respect for themselves, others and the environment.
Ōrākei School Montessori is open to Year 0-4 students and will grow to cover Years 5-12 as the children get older. We are fully integrated as part of the supportive Ōrākei School community and the children benefit from being taught through the Montessori philosophy, with the collegial atmosphere of the larger school environment. The Montessori class is centrally located within the school and has been carefully prepared with specialized materials designed to meet the needs of each individual child, no matter their age, ability or preferred working style.
Ōrākei School Montessori offers a multi-age learning community where every child is encouraged to be independent and develop their own potential. Through a curriculum that is structured to meet their academic, social, emotional and physical needs, the children become confident and passionate about their learning. Education is an exciting process of discovery, leading to long periods of concentration, higher levels of motivation, a strong sense of self-discipline, and a love of learning. At Ōrākei School Montessori intellectual and social discipline develop in harmony as children learn to be productive and active members of their learning community.
At Ōrākei School Montessori we encourage children to:
– Grow in independence and confidence
– Know themselves as learners
– Share their passions and interests
– Learn from one another in a peaceful and harmonious environment
– Discover the world and their part in it
– Develop their creativity, initiative and love of learning
Ōrākei School Montessori aims to empower children to take ownership of their learning to achieve excellence, discover their own abilities and build a strong foundation of knowledge. We encourage children to think deeply about their work and make connections to the world around them. Research studies show that Montessori children are well prepared for later life academically, socially, and emotionally and that Montessori education sets your child up for a lifetime of success. “Education should no longer be mostly imparting of knowledge, but must take a new path, seeking the release of human potentialities.” Maria Montessori
“Our aim is not merely to make the child understand, and still less to force him to memorize, but so to touch his imagination as to enthuse him to his innermost core.” Maria Montessori
A Typical Day at Ōrākei School Montessori
The children at Ōrākei School Montessori have a three hour work cycle between: 9-12:30pm.
After attending the whole school ‘Tuning In’ time the children will commence their work cycle by choosing materials, developing projects and planning the order of work for their day. The teacher will assist the child in gaining independence for managing their own learning. The learning environment is designed to enable students to choose work that they can be successful at, but will also be challenging, interesting and inspiring. Many of the activities are open-ended allowing the children to create their own follow-up work. Throughout the day the child will spend time working independently, with peers or with the teacher. The teacher spends time observing, planning and presenting lessons to meet the changing interests and needs of each child.
The work cycle concludes with thoughtful reflection about the learning that has taken place during this time through discussion, sharing or activities. Each child has the opportunity to participate and express their learning. This builds a culture of understanding, respect and appreciation for every child’s contributions.
The afternoon work cycle is shorter and may be used for continuing learning from the morning, sports or wider school activities or assemblies. The children are normally so consumed by their projects and learning experiences that they never want to go home!
Life in the Ōrākei School Montessori classroom may look quite different from your own primary school experience so please feel free to visit and ask as many questions as you can think of to hear more about this exciting way of learning.
